Box challenge - happy 1-1-11

I have not posted anything in december, as I have been busy with the boxes, which I hope will be evident in the steady stream of regular posts this month.

I start 2011 with  Lost Horizon.

The second picture shows the back-pared onlays in the process of being cut-out from an overlaid stencil for positioning.Sanskrit..
om mani padme hum
....tooled over with Eternal knots.

You will be seeing more boxes with back pared onlays. Planned correctly, they can save a lot of time.

James Hilton also took the time to inscribe one of the more memorable lines from the high lama of Shangri-la

"...When the strong have devoured each other, the Christian ethic may at last be fulfilled and the meek shall inherit the earth."

Happy New Year everybody.....PDB wishes the best for all in 2011, but really I'm just biding my time waiting for 2012 ....the year of the dragon....

your blog is great! I'm a hobby bookbinder in Germany (http://chienquiboite.over-blog.com) and I would like to ask you two questions: How do you make these wonderful back pared onlays? Do you cut through the two leathers with the stencil? Do you really work only with the plough, no guillotine, like in ancient times? That's really impressing. The cut is finer with the plough, I think. Best regards, Phil

hi phil...
i think the correct translation of your blog is "the dog that bites" right?...you are in germany but your blog articles are in both german and french...where abouts in germany are you based...the answer to your 1st question is "no",and the stencil is only for positioning.I hope you find this illuminating.

Hi, I'm in Baden-Württemberg, close to France and I took several bookbinding workshops in France. In fact, "boite" = limping... the limping dog. What I didn't understand yet: When you have pasted the onlay on the leather, do you pare the big piece of leather again with the Schärffix to get an even surface?
Best regards

hi phil,
sorry its taken me so long....yes ..pare an only to.10 microns, paste it onto the skin, then with knife, sharfix, or sand the back of the skin that has the onlay...hope this helps
